Pomodoro Timer
Boost productivity with a Pomodoro technique timer — 25-min work sessions and 5-min breaks.
What Is the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It breaks work into focused intervals — traditionally 25 minutes — separated by short breaks. Each interval is called a "Pomodoro" (Italian for tomato, named after Cirillo's tomato-shaped kitchen timer). After four Pomodoros, you take a longer 15-minute break to fully recharge.
This technique is backed by research in cognitive psychology: the brain benefits from regular rest intervals, preventing mental fatigue and maintaining sustained concentration. It also helps combat procrastination by committing to just one short work sprint at a time.
How to Use This Pomodoro Timer
- Choose a mode — Pomodoro (25 min), Short Break (5 min), or Long Break (15 min).
- Press the play button to start the countdown. The circular progress ring shows your remaining time visually.
- Work without distraction until the timer rings. Allow browser notifications to get an alert when the session ends.
- Take your break — start the break timer and rest. After 4 Pomodoros, take a long break.
- Track your progress — session dots and stats track completed Pomodoros and total focus time.
- Customize durations using the settings panel to fit your personal workflow.
Who Should Use the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro method works for a wide variety of people and tasks:
- Students studying for exams or working through coursework
- Developers & designers tackling complex, cognitively demanding tasks
- Writers who need to hit daily word count goals
- Remote workers managing self-directed schedules from home
- Anyone with ADHD or focus challenges who benefits from structured time blocks
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I customize the timer durations?
Yes! Click "Customize durations" below the timer controls to open the settings panel. You can set custom minutes for the Pomodoro session, short break, long break, and how many sessions before a long break. Click "Apply Settings" to save changes.
Will the timer notify me when it ends?
Yes — this timer uses the browser's Notifications API to send a desktop alert when each session completes. You'll be prompted to allow notifications the first time. If you miss the prompt, you can click the "Allow" button in the notification bar at the top of the timer card.
What happens after 4 Pomodoros?
After completing 4 Pomodoro work sessions (one full cycle), the timer automatically advances to a long break (default 15 minutes). Session dots fill up as you complete each Pomodoro, and the cycle counter increments after every long break.
Does this timer work if I switch browser tabs?
Yes. The timer uses JavaScript's setInterval along with a start timestamp approach, so the countdown remains accurate even when the tab is in the background. You'll still receive a browser notification when the session ends.
Is my session data saved?
Session statistics (completed Pomodoros, focus time, cycle count) are maintained for your current browser session. Refreshing the page will reset the counters. Custom duration settings you apply will persist in-session until the page is refreshed.
Can I use this on mobile?
Absolutely. The timer is fully responsive and works on mobile browsers. Note that browser notifications on mobile may behave differently depending on your device and browser — some mobile browsers require the site to be added to the home screen for full notification support.
