What Is a Tip Calculator?
A tip calculator is a simple financial tool that helps you quickly determine how much to tip on a bill, the total amount owed, and — when dining or splitting costs with others — exactly how much each person should pay. Instead of doing mental math at the table, this tool handles all the arithmetic instantly and accurately.
Whether you're at a restaurant, ordering delivery, getting a haircut, or booking a taxi, our tip calculator covers every tipping scenario with preset percentages and a fully flexible custom tip option.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard tip percentage?
In the United States, the standard tip for sit-down restaurant service is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill. 15% is considered adequate, 18% is the new baseline in many cities, and 20% is generous. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appropriate. For other services like hair salons, spas, and food delivery, 15–20% is also the norm.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. However, in practice many people tip on the total bill including tax since the difference is small and it simplifies the math. Either approach is perfectly acceptable — use whichever feels right to you.
How does the bill splitting work?
Simply enter the number of people in the "Number of People" field. The calculator will divide the total bill (including tip) equally among all people and show you exactly how much each person owes. Note: this calculator splits the bill evenly. If people ordered different amounts, you may want to calculate individually.
Can I enter a custom tip percentage?
Yes! Click the Custom button and type in any percentage you like — for example 12%, 22%, or even 0%. The calculator supports decimal values (e.g., 17.5%) for maximum flexibility. Results update instantly as you type.
What tip should I leave for delivery orders?
For food delivery, a tip of 15–20% (minimum $3–5) is generally recommended. Delivery drivers often rely on tips as a significant part of their income, especially for third-party apps where base pay can be low. For longer distances or bad weather, consider tipping on the higher end.
Does the calculator include tax in the total?
The calculator uses whatever bill amount you enter. If you enter the pre-tax subtotal, the total shown will be subtotal + tip. If you enter a post-tax amount, tip is calculated on that. We recommend entering the pre-tax amount for the most traditional calculation, but the tool works correctly either way.
