What is a Budget Tracker?

A budget tracker is a personal finance management tool that helps you monitor, organize, and analyze your income and expenses. By tracking your spending patterns across different categories—food, rent, entertainment, and more—you gain visibility into your financial habits. This awareness allows you to identify spending trends, set realistic financial goals, and make informed decisions about where your money goes each month.

How to Use

Select Your Currency: Choose your preferred currency symbol from the dropdown at the top.

Add Transactions: Select whether it's income or expense, pick the appropriate category, enter the amount, select the date, and optionally add a description. Click "Add Transaction" to record it.

View Your Summary: Track your total income, total expenses, and current balance at a glance. The summary updates automatically based on your selected month.

Analyze Spending: Review the expense distribution chart to see which categories consume the most of your budget.

Filter by Month: Use the month filter to focus on transactions from a specific period and analyze your finances by month.

Manage Entries: Delete any transaction using the delete button. Edit by deleting and adding the corrected entry.

Export Your Data: Download all transactions as a CSV file for backup or analysis in spreadsheet applications.

Use Cases

This budget tracker works for anyone wanting to take control of their finances. Students can track part-time income and manage living expenses to stay within budget. Freelancers can monitor multiple income streams and categorize business expenses for tax purposes. Families can combine expenses to understand household spending patterns. Whether you're saving for a specific goal, recovering from debt, or simply curious about where your money goes, this tool provides the clarity needed to make smarter financial decisions. Small business owners, remote workers, and anyone managing personal finances will find value in its simplicity and offline-first approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my data secure and private?

Yes. All your budget data is stored locally in your browser's localStorage and never sent to any server. Only you can access your data. It remains entirely on your device and is not shared with anyone, including us.

What happens if I clear my browser cache?

If you clear your browser's localStorage (sometimes part of cache clearing), your data will be deleted. To prevent data loss, export your transactions as CSV before clearing your browser data. You can then import them later if needed.

Does this work on mobile devices?

Yes! This budget tracker is fully responsive and works seamlessly on phones, tablets, and desktop computers. Use it anywhere you have a web browser. Your data syncs automatically if you use the same browser and device.

How do I export my transactions?

Click the "Export as CSV" button at the bottom of the tool. This downloads a CSV file with all your transactions that you can open in Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet application for further analysis or backup.

Can I add custom categories?

The app includes preset categories: Income (Salary, Freelance, Other) and Expenses (Food, Rent, Transport, Entertainment, Health, Other). Use the "Other" category for transactions that don't fit neatly into the predefined categories.

How do I edit a transaction?

Delete the transaction using the delete button next to it, then add a new one with the correct information. We're considering direct edit functionality for future versions based on user feedback.
