What is a Character Counter?
A character counter is a tool that counts the number of characters (letters, numbers, spaces, and symbols) in your text. This is essential for social media marketing because each platform has different character limits for posts, captions, and descriptions.
By using a character counter before posting, you can ensure your content fits perfectly within each platform's restrictions, preventing truncation or posting failures.

Why do different platforms have different character limits?
Each social media platform has its own character restrictions based on how their systems display content. Twitter/X has a 280 limit, while Facebook allows much longer posts (63,206 characters). One catch worth knowing: X's 280 is a weighted length, not a character count — CJK characters cost 2 each, so a Chinese or Japanese post really has room for about 140 characters. This tool applies that weighting when Twitter/X is selected.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser and never sends your text to any server. Your privacy is completely protected, and no data is stored or tracked.
Can I use special characters and emojis?
Yes, and the unit depends on the platform you pick. For Twitter/X the tool uses the official weighted length from the twitter-text v3 config: only code points 0–4351, 8192–8205, 8208–8223 and 8242–8247 have weight 100 (= 1); everything else, including CJK characters and most emoji, has weight 200 (= 2). That is why 280 Chinese characters weigh 560 on X. For every other platform the tool counts Unicode code points, so 👍 is 1. To be straight about the limits: the other platforms' own rules are not individually implemented here, and X's "URLs always count as 23" and emoji-cluster rules are not applied either — near the limit, check the platform itself.
What happens if I exceed the character limit?
The progress bar will turn red to indicate you've exceeded the limit. Most platforms will prevent you from posting or will automatically truncate your text, so it's important to stay within the limit.
Can I switch platforms while typing?
Yes! Simply select a different platform from the dropdown, and the character counter will immediately update to show the new platform's limit for your text.
