Which formula is most accurate?
All formulas are approximations and have strengths and limitations. The Devine and Robinson formulas are most widely used in clinical practice. Rather than relying on one formula, this calculator shows all results so you can see the consensus range and understand that your ideal weight is likely somewhere within that band.
Why do the formulas give different results?
Each formula was developed in different decades and based on different population studies, with different assumptions about healthy body composition. The Devine formula (1974) tends to give lower estimates, while the Hamwi formula (1964) tends to give higher estimates. This diversity is actually useful—it shows that a range is more meaningful than a single number.
What does frame size mean?
Frame size refers to your skeletal structure and bone density. A small frame has lighter, thinner bones; a large frame has heavier, thicker bones. Since bone weight is part of body weight, two people of the same height and gender can have different ideal weights based on frame size. If you're unsure of your frame size, medium is a safe default.
Should I aim for the exact center of my ideal range?
Not necessarily. Your ideal weight depends on factors beyond height and gender, including muscle mass, fitness level, genetics, age, and overall health. If you're within the healthy range and feel good, that's what matters most. A healthcare provider can give personalized guidance based on your individual health profile.
Is the BMI-based range reliable?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so very muscular individuals might show as overweight. The healthy BMI range of 18.5–24.9 is appropriate for most adults but should be combined with other health indicators. For personalized assessment, consult a healthcare professional.
Can I use this calculator for children?
No. These formulas are designed for adults (typically 18+). Children and adolescents have different growth patterns, body composition changes, and should be evaluated using age- and gender-specific growth charts. Always consult a pediatrician for children's ideal weight and growth assessment.
