What's the difference between "Total Characters" and "Characters Without Spaces"?
Total characters includes every character in your text, including spaces. Characters without spaces counts all characters except whitespace. Many platforms like Twitter count total characters (with spaces), while some coding standards focus on non-space characters. Our tool shows both so you can track what matters for your use case.
What counts as a "Special Character"?
"Other Symbols" means code points that are not whitespace, not CJK characters, not letters in any script, not digits and not punctuation — currency and maths symbols, emoji, arrows and similar. Punctuation (including full-width marks such as 。，、！？) has its own count, and the two buckets are mutually exclusive, so Letters + CJK + Digits + Spaces + Punctuation + Other Symbols always equals Total Characters.
How accurate is the character counter?
It counts exactly what it says it counts: every figure is derived per Unicode code point, and the category counts always sum to the total. What it is not is a stand-in for any platform’s own rule — X (Twitter) uses weighted length (CJK counts as 2, URLs count as 23), and other platforms differ again. Use the X weighted length shown above for X, and check the platform itself when a limit really matters. The tool runs entirely in your browser; no data is sent to any server.
Does the tool count emojis and unicode characters?
Yes. Every Unicode character is counted, per code point. A simple emoji such as 👍 is one code point and counts as 1 (the old version counted it as 2, because it measured UTF-16 code units). An emoji built from several code points — 👨👩👧 is 5 — counts as 5. Platforms differ: X (Twitter) gives most emoji a weight of 2, which the X weighted length above reflects.
