Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between adding and removing VAT?
Adding VAT calculates the tax on a net amount: Gross = Net × (1 + VAT%). Removing VAT extracts the tax from a gross amount: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + VAT%). Both operations are inverses of each other.
What does “inclusive price” mean?
An inclusive price is the total amount a customer pays—VAT is already included. An exclusive price is the base amount before VAT is added. This calculator automatically adjusts its calculation based on your selection.
Is the VAT rate accurate for my country?
Our rates reflect standard VAT/GST as of 2024. However, many countries have reduced rates for specific items (food, medicine, etc.). Always verify with your local tax authority for exact rates applicable to your goods or services.
Can I use this calculator for sales tax in the USA?
Yes, but with a note: The USA doesn’t have a national VAT; instead, states charge sales tax (typically 5–10%). Our calculator works the same way, but always check your specific state’s rate, as it may also vary by product type.
What currencies does this calculator support?
The calculator is currency-agnostic—it works with any currency (USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, etc.). The VAT percentage remains the same regardless of currency.
How is VAT calculated mathematically?
Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate/100)
Remove VAT: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate/100), VAT = Gross − Net
