What is the Reading List Tracker?

The Reading List Tracker is a free, browser-based tool designed to help you manage your reading life. Organize books into three categories (Want to Read, Currently Reading, and Finished), track your progress with page counts and dates, rate your reads, and visualize your reading habits through statistics. No account needed, no data stored on servers—everything stays private on your device using browser storage.

How to Use the Reading List Tracker

  1. Add a Book: Enter the book title, author, genre, and total page count, then click "Add Book."
  2. Set Your Reading Goal: Define how many books you want to read this year and save your goal.
  3. Organize Books: Drag books between the three columns (Want to Read → Currently Reading → Finished) or use the quick-action buttons on each book card.
  4. Track Progress: For books you're currently reading, enter the number of pages you've read to see a live progress bar update.
  5. Record Dates: Automatically capture when you started a book, or manually set start and finish dates.
  6. Rate & Review: Give finished books a 1–5 star rating once you complete them.
  7. View Statistics: See your reading stats at a glance: books read this year, total pages, average rating, favorite genre, and progress toward your goal.
  8. Search & Filter: Use the search box to quickly find books by title, author, or genre.
  9. Backup Your Data: Export your reading list as JSON to back it up or move it to another device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sync my reading list across devices?

Not directly, as the tracker uses browser localStorage for privacy. However, you can export your list as JSON on one device and keep backups on your computer or cloud storage.

How is my reading goal progress calculated?

Your goal progress shows the percentage of books you've read this calendar year versus your annual target. For example, if you set a goal of 24 books and have finished 12, your progress is 50%.

Can I edit a book after adding it?

Yes! You can edit pages read, dates, and ratings directly by clicking on the input fields within each book card. Simply update the values and they save automatically.

What happens if I clear all data?

Clicking "Clear All" removes every book from your reading list permanently. A confirmation dialog appears before deletion. Export a backup first if you want to keep your data!

How is the favorite genre determined?

The system analyzes all finished books from this calendar year and displays the genre with the most entries. If there's a tie, it alphabetically picks the first one.

Can I print my reading list?

Yes! Use your browser's print function (Cmd+P on Mac, Ctrl+P on Windows) to print the current view of your tracker. Exporting as JSON is also available for archiving.
